Texas Gov. Abbott makes ERCOT billing issue another emergency item for Legislature

Gov. Greg Abbott has declared another legislative emergency item related to last month’s winter storm.

The “correction of any billing errors related to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas” has been added to the 87th Legislative Session for immediate consideration, Abbott announced the evening of March 9. The item includes “any inaccurate excessive charges and any issues regarding ancillary service prices.”

Abbott’s announcement did not comment on the item further.

Just Energy files bankruptcy after receiving big ERCOT bill from Texas freeze

Canada-based electricity retailer Just Energy Group Inc. has had to turn to the bankruptcy court in the fallout from Texas’ statewide blackouts in February.

On March 9, Just Energy petitioned the Southern District of Texas Bankruptcy Court for Chapter 15 bankruptcy protections and recognition of the main proceedings taking place in Canadian court. This is the second time in about six months that Just Energy has had to bring a Chapter 15 bankruptcy filing to the Houston court. It petitioned the court for recognition of a recapitalization as the result of a Canadian process in September, and that case exited the court at the end of October.
