Texas wants to strengthen the power grid. Are batteries the answer?

Shelby Webb

The deadly winter storm that gripped Texas tragically showed the need — or opportunity — for large scale battery storage. As the bitter cold knocked power plants and wind turbines offline in rapid succession, stored energy might have been able to replace the lost generating capacity and keep the lights and heat on.

Energy storage remains the missing link in an increasingly complex power grid under increasing threat from extreme weather. Only about 460 megawatts of energy storage — compared to system-wide generation capacity near 90,000 megawatts — are connected to the Texas power grid, according the …

Engie considers $380M combined solar, battery storage project in Texas

By Emily Burleson

The Houston-based North American arm of French renewables developer Engie SA is considering building a $380 million Central Texas solar power and battery storage project, which would be significantly bigger than the rest of its portfolio.

The proposed Five Wells Solar Center LLC project in Bell County, Texas, would have a solar power production capacity of 350 megawatts as well as utility-scale battery storage with 265 MW of capacity, according to documents filed with the Texas comptroller’s office.

It would be Engie’s first combined solar power production and …
