US EIA projects growing gas exports despite slashed shale outlook

The Energy Information Administration on Monday slashed its US shale natural gas resource estimate by 345 Tcf from last year’s projections, but said the country still is likely to become a net exporter of gas in 2021.

The estimated unproved technically recoverable resource for shale gas in the US is now 482 Tcf, down from last year’s 827 Tcf estimate, the EIA said in an early release of its 2012 annual energy outlook.

“The decline largely reflects a decrease in the estimate for the Marcellus shale, from 410 Tcf to 141 Tcf,” EIA said. …
