US energy secretary calls for faster power grid modernization

US Energy Secretary Steven Chu on Tuesday said that the deployment of solar, wind and other renewable energy was outpacing the development of a modern electricity grid, and that the country risked falling behind others in the use of advanced grid technologies.
“It is only a matter of time before solar energy becomes equal in cost to many forms of fossil [fuels]. Whether it is going to be 10 years or 15 years, there is a debate,” Chu told the GridWise Global Forum in Washington. “We need a grid that can accommodate these technology gains.” …
